Benefit Coordination

We’ve won your award.  What’s next?

Social Security Advocates for the Disabled has helped you achieve what you thought was impossible. You’ve won your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) award, and soon you will begin receiving your monthly payments.

The fight is not quite over.  Upon receiving your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) award, there are often many details to work through in the post-award process.

Your first SSDI monthly benefit will be paid for the sixth full month after the date that the Social Security Administration (SSA) determined that you became disabled (Disability Onset Date). Your first payment may be a lump sum covering this period of time. We can help you determine whether the balance you receive is accurate.

If you have private long-term disability insurance, you should not spend any of your past-due benefits before speaking with one of our associates. This is because it may be considered an “overpayment,” and some or all of it may be owed to your long-term disability carrier.

An overpayment occurs when you are paid benefits by your long-term disability carrier, and then receive a “double-payment” for the same period from SSA. This is very common and we will help coordinate your award with your insurance carrier based on your policy requirements.

Our benefit coordinators can set up an electronic funds transfer (EFT) with your insurance carrier to simplify the overpayment process.
